However, in the second half, England’s intensity dropped, reminding fans of their past struggles under Gareth Southgate.
Grealish, who missed out on Euro 2024, was given freedom to roam in this game and took full advantage, creating overloads on both wings. His combination with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka for the second goal was a highlight. Trent Alexander-Arnold, back in his preferred right-back position for the first time since 2021, shined by contributing both defensively and offensively, delivering a perfect cross for Harry Kane early on and finishing the game with the most touches of any England player.
Anthony Gordon, overlooked by Southgate in the summer, was a constant threat on the left wing under Carsley. His movement caused problems for the Irish defense, and though he didn’t score, his performance was strong. Carsley, who coached him at the Under-21s, seems to trust him fully, giving him more opportunities in the future.
Jordan Pickford also adapted well to the new approach, focusing on short, accurate passes instead of long, wasteful ones, helping England maintain 77% possession. His distribution allowed the team to control the game better, a marked improvement from Euro 2024. Despite some criticism, Pickford’s position as England’s No.1 remains secure for now due to his experience and improved technical play.
