Anthony Gordon scored a penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for Newcastle against Manchester City at St James’ Park. Gordon was brought down by City’s goalkeeper Ederson, leading to a controversial penalty, but he calmly converted the spot-kick to equalize after Josko Gvardiol had given City the lead in the first half. Gvardiol’s goal came from a well-worked move involving Jack Grealish, but despite some late chances, City couldn’t regain the lead.
City played without key players Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, which made it difficult for them to break through Newcastle’s defense. Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva had chances, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper Nick Pope kept them at bay. There were also concerns when Erling Haaland suffered a cut on his ankle after a challenge from Dan Burn, though he managed to continue playing.
Despite the draw, Manchester City remain top of the Premier League, although Arsenal or Liverpool could overtake them depending on the day’s later results. Newcastle sit in fifth place, just three points behind the leaders.
