The Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United is off to an anti-climactic start as they drew against Ipswich Town 1-1 at Portman Road Stadium. The start was straight out of a fairytale as Amad skipped past multiple Ipswich players to cross for Marcus Rashford which he scored to put United in the lead in less than two minutes.
However, United looked like they had become too comfortable and despite some moments of nice play, especially in transition, Ipswich dominated territory. Buoyed by the raucous home support, they made their dominance count despite Andre Onana’s best efforts when Omari Hutchinson bent one in to send his team level at half-time and leave Amorim with a lot to think about.
Outside the opening 80 seconds, United had just ten shots worth a total xG of 0.63 – their lowest in all but one Premier League fixture this season. The one-two between Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes, which led to Rashford’s rapid opener, was United’s only moment of ingenuity in settled possession.
Ruben Amorim admits United will have to “suffer” as they strive to master his favoured 3-4-3 formation. United drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town at Portman Road in Amorim’s first match in charge and struggled to adjust to the Portuguese’s demands as Andre Onana was called upon to make three impressive saves.
It is all over here at Portman Road and the points are shared in Ruben Amorim’s first game as United head coach. The Reds made the dream start, scoring inside two minutes through Marcus Rashford, but they were pegged back shortly before half-time via a goal from Omari Hutchinson. Amorim will know he has plenty to work on in the coming weeks.
