Manchester City expert Steven McInerney thinks the team might struggle in their opening Champions League match against Inter Milan on Wednesday. City has started the Premier League season perfectly, winning all four of their opening games and sitting at the top of the table. Their latest victory was a 2-1 comeback against Brentford, with Erling Haaland scoring twice. Now, they face a series of home games, including a Champions League match against Inter, followed by matches against Arsenal and Watford in other competitions.
This upcoming game is a rematch of the 2023 Champions League final, where City defeated Inter 1-0 thanks to a goal from Rodri. While City reached the quarter-finals last season, Inter were knocked out in the round of 16 but dominated Serie A, winning the title by a wide margin. So far, Inter has had a good start to their domestic season, but they’ve dropped points in both of their away matches. Despite this, Guardiola and Rodri have praised Inter as a strong and well-organized team.
McInerney believes the match will be difficult for City, with Inter looking for revenge after losing the Champions League final two years ago. Although City has a strong home record, with 46 unbeaten matches in all competitions, McInerney thinks Inter could leave with at least a point. City should be confident, but they’ll need to be cautious, especially since they are close to equalling Manchester United’s record of 25 unbeaten Champions League matches if they avoid defeat in their next two games.
