Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s 33-year-old defender, has expressed his desire to stay with the club for another two years, even though his contract is set to expire next summer. He emphasized his leadership role for both Liverpool and the Netherlands national team, saying he wants to continue being a key figure for both. After being disappointed by the Netherlands’ elimination in the last minute at Euro 2024, he reflected on the emotional toll it took on him but clarified that he is still committed to playing.

Van Dijk mentioned how last season was intense, especially with the added responsibility of being a captain. He said that while he focuses on helping his teammates and leading the team, he also ensures that it doesn’t affect his personal performance on the field. Although he admits his performances could have been better, he doesn’t believe they were poor, just that expectations are always high, and he strives to meet them.

He also spoke about discussions with the national coach, analyzing the team’s performance in the Euros and his role moving forward. Van Dijk feels confident in his importance, both on and off the pitch, and is ready to continue taking responsibility for the team as a leader.
