Manchester City won the Community Shield by defeating Manchester United on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

United looked set to win after Alejandro Garnacho scored in the 82nd minute, finishing a pass from Bruno Fernandes. However, City equalized in the 89th minute when Bernardo Silva headed in a cross from Oscar Bobb. In the penalty shootout, Manuel Akanji scored the decisive spot-kick after Jonny Evans missed his, securing the victory for City.

The match was closely contested, with both teams having chances to score. City’s James McAtee hit the post, while United came close to a spectacular goal when Amad Diallo’s pass just missed Fernandes. Marcus Rashford also hit the woodwork for United, who created more opportunities overall. Despite a frustrating first half for City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, who was visibly upset with his team’s performance, he was all smiles in the end as City clinched the win.

Pep praises on McAtee, Bobb and Savinho

The coach acknowledged that the team could have lost but was pleased with many aspects of their performance, especially in the first 35 minutes, despite the players not being fully in sync yet. He praised young players James McAtee and Oscar Bobb for their impressive performances, noting that they have earned the trust of their teammates.

The coach also mentioned that if Bobb plays regularly, he could have a successful season like Cole Palmer did last year. Lastly, he was happy with new signing Savinho’s positive impact from the bench, especially in helping create scoring opportunities.

Ten Hag on Marcus Rashford and Casemiro

The coach expressed disappointment over the loss, emphasizing that feeling the pain is important but also recognizing some positives in their performance. He was pleased with Marcus Rashford’s positioning during the game, confident that if he continues making good movements, the goals will come.

The coach also praised Casemiro’s improved performance, noting that his full pre-season has put him in great shape and his contributions are crucial to the team. Lastly, he mentioned that he has no indication that Casemiro will leave the club and is happy about that.
