Manchester United have signed Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich for €50m (£42.7m), with an initial €45m (£38.4m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in add-ons. The 24-year-old centre-back, who played 73 games and scored five goals for Bayern, reunites with manager Erik ten Hag, who helped shape his early career. De Ligt is ready to play in United’s Premier League opener against Fulham.
United have also strengthened their defense by signing full-back Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich for €15m (£12.8m) plus potential add-ons of €5m (£4.2m). The Moroccan international, who played under Ten Hag at Ajax and reached the World Cup semi-finals with Morocco, joins on a four-year deal. His arrival follows the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham.
These signings, along with the addition of Leny Yoro earlier in the summer, address United’s need for defensive reinforcements. De Ligt and Mazraoui bring experience and versatility, while Yoro adds athleticism and technical ability. Despite Yoro’s injury in pre-season, United are confident in their new-look defense as they aim for success this season.
